Escarpment-Edge Retaining Wall in Ancaster
Engineered retaining wall on Niagara Escarpment slope in Ancaster, featuring natural stone veneer, integrated LED lighting, and terraced planting beds with native species.
Working with a licensed structural engineer, we designed a two-tier wall system using reinforced concrete block cores with natural limestone veneer that echoes the exposed Queenston shale found throughout the Hamilton escarpment. Each tier incorporates geogrid reinforcement extending 6 feet behind the wall face into compacted granular backfill. The drainage system includes a French drain behind each tier connected to a daylight outlet at the lower yard. Given the escarpment edge location, we coordinated with the Hamilton Conservation Authority to ensure compliance with all environmental regulations.
Integrated LED strip lighting along the wall cap illuminates the terraced planting beds, which feature native escarpment species including columbine, wild bergamot, and little bluestem grass. The completed wall system provides full structural stability with a design life exceeding 50 years, backed by our 10-year workmanship warranty.
